A project that provokes users' senses of their visceral responses. A time-based (that is, decaying) slab of meat, constructed as a book, is embedded with various sensors that cause the meat to react and quiver as the viewer approaches it. The reanimated flesh also responds with other movements and sound when users touch it. The next stage of development includes artificial intelligence and explores notions of generative art.
Biomorphic Type™

BioMorphic Typography is Gromala's term for a family of fonts that respond, in real-time, to a user's changing physical states, as measured by a biofeedback device. Rather than one typeface, it is a postmodern pastiche of many different fonts that are continually morphing. So, for example, the font "throbs" as the user's/writer's heart beats, expands as the user breathes, and "spikes" according to galvanic skin response. In this way, users become aware of their autonomic states -- physiological states that usually remain under our conscious awareness. This project is part of a larger initiative, Design for the Senses. The goal is to develop new approaches to experiential design that focus on the senses and the phenomenological history of the body.

The Meditation Chamber is an immersive VR environment that provides users with real-time feedback. Wearing a head-mounted display and biofeedback device, users are guided through a series of relaxation and meditation techniques. In real-time, the audio and visuals are synced to the users' continually changing physiological states (respiration, pulse rate and sweat gland activity (a measure of calmness)). As users' approach meditative states, the hypnotic visuals dissolve to moving mist and darkness as the user relaxes. Exhibited at SIGGRAPH's Emerging Technologies, and seen on CNN.
Amputation Box(2006)

Artists : David Jhave Johnston, Jinsil Seo, Diane Gromala

Amputation Box is an art installation that feeds a website.

It's just a few boxes boxes with holes in them. Holes are finger-sized, hand-sized, and head-sized. Light comes out of the holes. Every object poked into the holes is visually amputated and redisplayed as landscape or organism: horizon flesh, or creeping or flying flesh.

The Amputation Box website updates dynamically each time a new morsel of flesh video is amputated and automatically added to the archives on the server. Physical and online spaces form a continuum. The physical Amputation Boxes feed the Amputation Box website.

It is about birth, death, rebirth and how each body is part of a larger body. The embodied body and the online body.

It is a visual meditation on molecular reincarnation designed to generate nano-epiphanies. It exists virtually, physically, and mentally.

Online real-time reincarnation.

New this Year

InfoVis Art Exhibit

Information visualization is traditionally viewed as a tool for data
exploration and hypothesis formation. In recent years, however, both the
mainstreaming of computer graphics and the democratization of data
sources on the Internet have had important repercussions in the field of
information visualization. With the ability to create visual
representations of data on home computers, artists and designers have
greatly expanded the practice of infovis as artistic pursuit.

In its first edition, the InfoVis Art Exhibit examines the merging of
artistic intention and visualization technique. We are looking for
artwork that reveals data patterns in aesthetic, innovative ways.

The InfoVis Art Exhibit will consider the following types of work:
* interactive CD/DVD-ROM work
* interactive web-based work
* printed artwork

Accepted art submissions will be included electronically on the IEEE
Visualization 2005 Conference DVD, shown during the InfoVis symposium,
placed on the official infovis.org web site, and the summary will be
distributed in a hardcopy compendium to all symposium and conference
attendees.

----

Objectives

It is essential for researchers in the social sciences and humanities to have the expertise necessary to carry out research in today’s rapidly evolving technological environment. For example, in 1999, SSHRC and Statistics Canada launched the Data Training Schools. This program enables researchers to learn about and apply advanced technologies to the analysis of social statistics at university-based Research Data Centres across the country. Similarly, the ITST program will help researchers refine their ability to apply digital multimedia technologies to their research on image, text and sound.

The overall objectives of the ITST program are to:

reflect on, interpret, and analyze new digital media, multimedia, and text-based computing technologies and integrate these into humanities and social sciences research;

bring together theorists, experimentalists, and technologists from different disciplines, to share and nurture ideas and methods that challenge research to advance through the use of audio-visual and text-based technologies;

facilitate the creation of national and international networks of, and partnerships among, researchers, industries, governments, and individuals that will promote and sustain social sciences and humanities research and resources worldwide.

The specific objectives of ITST Research Grants are to support projects that:

employ innovative technological tools in image, text and sound to make social sciences and humanities research more efficient, effective and comprehensive;

devise new and creative applications for technology that offer valuable models that can be applied specifically to research in the social sciences and humanities.

----

Description

SSHRC strongly encourages applicants to develop proposals for multidisciplinary teams of co-applicants, partners and collaborators that will offer the necessary range of intellectual, technical and practical expertise. Partners and collaborators may be drawn from the private and public sectors as well as from academia. Applicants may also wish to include on the team appropriate specialists from outside Canada.

Possible topics and areas to be addressed include:

electronic editing and publishing;

e-literature;

Web programming;

immersive and virtual environments in multimedia research;

textual analysis;

3 -D imaging technology;

creativity, culture, and computing;

digital image design;

information aesthetics;

computer gaming;

knowledge transfer of research results to fellow researchers, decision makers and the public at large.

Please note that this program does not support the following:

digitization of collections of images, books, or sounds;

support for routine computer applications from which little new knowledge about image, text, and sound technology will emerge;

creation of stand-alone major research tools;

research activities, already funded under other SSHRC programs, that do not involve transformative multimedia and new media technologies;

development of technological infrastructure.

Duration of Projects Up to three years

This program is jointly funded by NSERC and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

----

Objectives

In the context of improved health for Canadians, the objectives of the Collaborative Health Research Projects (CHRP) program are to:

* translate research results to end users/stakeholders (the mechanism for translation must be clearly described);

* encourage the NSERC and CIHR communities to collaborate and integrate their expertise and research activities;

* advance interdisciplinary research leading to knowledge and technologies useful for improving the health of Canadians;

* train highly qualified people in collaborative and interdisciplinary research of relevance to health.

Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) will not be considered under this program. RCTs are defined as any study involving humans where at least two interventions are compared using random allocation, statistical methodologies and blinding techniques for the purpose of determining whether an innovative intervention leads to improved health.

However, RCT applications may be submitted to CIHR’s regular RCT program. CIHR recommends that you familiarize yourself with the RCT specific guidelines and instructions, which are fully described in CIHR Randomized Controlled Trials Program – Guidelines for Completion. Potential applicants are strongly advised to consult with CIHR RCT staff listed in the Contact section of the above Web site.

----

Description

The CHRP program supports focused collaborative research projects involving any field of the natural sciences or engineering and the health sciences. If successful, the projects will lead to health benefits for Canadians, more effective health services, or economic development in health-related areas. The proposed project may range from fundamental knowledge creation to research on knowledge application relevant to industry or public policy. Typically, support will be for up to three years for defined projects with milestones, a beginning, an end, and clear decision points.

The participation of two or more independent researchers with complementary expertise is required. Team composition must include expertise in the natural sciences or engineering, and in the health sciences. New and genuine collaborations between researchers in the natural sciences and engineering and medical researchers, clinicians, social scientists, and humanists are strongly encouraged. The onus is on the applicant to clearly demonstrate that the assembled research team under the leadership of the principal investigator collectively has the necessary expertise for successful execution of the project. Collaborators from other sectors (e.g., government and industry) and foreign researchers are welcome to participate, but are expected to bring their own resources to the project. While the participation of partners from outside the academic sector is not required, applicants are strongly encouraged to form linkages with relevant users and stakeholders.

Applicants and co-applicants applying to receive funds must hold eligible appointments at a Canadian postsecondary institution and these must take effect no later than April 1 following the year of the application. Principal applicants must be eligible under both NSERC eligibility guidelines and CIHR. Co-applicants are eligible if they meet the criteria of either NSERC or CIHR eligibility guidelines.

The BioMedia Studio is dedicated to creatively exploring
the relationships among art, technology, and the biosciences. Our interests range across disciplines: biomedical phenomenology, open source DNA, visceral forensics, genome hacking, affective biometrics, and biomolecular networking.

Projects in the BioMedia Lab emphasize the role that aesthetics, design, and representation play in our broad understanding of biotechnology, biomedicine, and related fields. Many projects involve collaboration with SFU colleagues and students in computer science, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, electrical engineering, and architecture.
